Ruaha National Park Wildlife Highlights

Crocodiles, hippos, and the elusive African clawless otter thrive in the rivers and along the banks of Ruaha, creating exceptional opportunities for water‑based wildlife viewing.

Ruaha’s diverse habitats and dramatic landscapes make it one of Tanzania’s most iconic safari destinations. The park is home to one of the largest lion populations in East Africa and over 10,000 elephants one of the biggest elephant concentrations on the continent.

Birdwatching is outstanding, with more than 500 recorded species, making Ruaha a paradise for bird lovers and photographers.

For air access, the park is served by two main airstrips: Msembe Airstrip and Jongomeru Airstrip, both connecting Ruaha to Dar es Salaam, Zanzibar, Arusha, and the wider Southern Circuit, also connect to rest of northern park.

Best Time to Visit

May – October is the best period for wildlife viewing in Ruaha. During the dry season, the bush thins out, making animals easier to spot as they gather around rivers and waterholes. Skies are bright, humidity is low, and rain is minimal ideal conditions for game drives, walking safaris, and photography.

January – April brings the green season, when the landscape becomes lush and vibrant. This is the peak time for migratory birds, offering excellent birdwatching and beautiful scenery with fewer crowds. Early April and May may experience heavier rains, which can occasionally affect game drives.

November to early December marks the short rains. Fresh vegetation begins to appear, wildlife remains active, and the park is quieter a great time for travellers seeking value and dramatic skies.

What to Do

Ruaha offers a wide range of activities, including wildlife safaris, birding safaris, walking safaris, and cultural village tours. Visitors can enjoy both budget and luxury safari experiences, explore historical and cultural sites, take part in hot air balloon safaris, and experience night game drives for unique nocturnal sightings.

Getting There

Most safaris to Ruaha begin in Dar es Salaam, with travellers arriving through Julius Nyerere International Airport (DAR), Zanzibar International Airport (ZNZ), or Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO).

The park is accessible by road, with a full‑day drive of about 10 hours from Dar es Salaam, or shorter routes from Dodoma, Iringa, and Mbeya.

For faster access, chartered or scheduled flights operate from Dar es Salaam, Arusha, and Zanzibar to Msembe or Jongomeru Airstrip, or to Iringa Airport. Direct flights also connect Ruaha with other Southern Circuit parks and even the Serengeti.
