The Garden of God (Bustani ya Mungu)

Kitulo National Park, famously known as Bustani ya Mungu “The Garden of God” is one of Tanzania’s most extraordinary natural treasures. Often called the Serengeti of Flowers, the Kitulo Plateau hosts one of the greatest floral spectacles in the world, attracting botanists, nature lovers and photographers from across the globe.

Located in the Southern Highlands of Tanzania, Kitulo National Park covers 412.9 km² of protected montane grasslands and volcanic soils. It is the first national park in tropical Africa established primarily to protect its flora, making it a globally significant botanical sanctuary.

The park is home to over 350 species of wildflowers and vascular plants, including vibrant lilies, daisies, asters, and an impressive 45 species of terrestrial orchids that bloom spectacularly during the rainy season. Kitulo’s montane grasslands are considered the largest and most important of their kind in Tanzania.

Beyond its floral richness, Kitulo National Park shelters rare and endemic wildlife, including unique species of butterflies, chameleons, lizards, and frogs found nowhere else on earth. The park is also a haven for birdlife, hosting the rare Denham’s bustard and serving as a crucial breeding ground for the endangered blue swallow.
