Gateway to the Southern Circuit

Experience wide open savannahs, abundant wildlife, and unforgettable game drives.

Mikumi National Park

Mikumi National Park is Tanzania’s fourth‑largest Park, covering 3,240 km² and offering the most accessible safari from Dar es Salaam, Dodoma, Morogoro, and by flight from Zanzibar. Its open plains and reliable wildlife sightings make it ideal for travellers with limited time.

Bordering Nyerere National Park, the Uluguru Mountains, and Udzungwa Mountains, Mikumi forms a diverse and scenic Southern Circuit. The park hosts lions, elephants, giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, buffalo, hippos, crocodiles, and over 400 bird species. It is also home to a unique giraffe subspecies and a high number of rare and endemic plants and animals.

Often compared to the Serengeti for its wide savannahs, Mikumi offers classic game viewing and excellent photographic opportunities.

Best Time to Visit

Open year‑round, with the dry season offering the best wildlife viewing.

Getting There

  • By road: Good tarmac road from Dar es Salaam via Morogoro, with links to Udzungwa, Ruaha, Dodoma, and Selous.
  • By train: Travelers can also reach Mikumi via the SGR train to Morogoro Station, then continue by road for about 1.5 hours to the Park.
  • By air: Scheduled and charter flights from Dar es Salaam, Zanzibar, Arusha, and Selous.

Accommodation

Mikumi offers a good range of budget and mid‑range accommodations both inside the park and in nearby Mikumi town. Inside the park, visitors can stay at Mikumi Bandas, a few lodges and tented camps, and three public campsites. Just outside the park, Mikumi town provides additional options including lodges, guesthouses, and campsites, all conveniently located near the park gate.
